(NOTE! We will open Kuopan Tila on Saturday, November 15, 2025)
Kuopan Tila is part of the history of Äkäslompolo and Ylläs – a traditional Lapland farm whose roots reach back to the late 1800s.
It was founded in 1885 as a crown forest croft along the road to Äkäslompolo.
The name “Kuoppa” is even older than the house itself – it’s believed to come from a deep part of the Äkäsjoki River, once known as a popular trout fishing spot.
The farm was built on a sunny southern slope, at the meeting point of two rivers in the heart of Lapland’s nature.
For decades, Kuopan Tila served as a resting place for travellers and guests, and the spirit of hospitality still lives on today.
Today, Kuopan Tila is a family estate run by the fourth generation – a place where history, warmth, and the peace of nature come together.
1885

Kuopan Tila, located along the road to Äkäslompolo, was founded as a crown forest croft in 1885.
1901

In 1901, the crown forest croft was converted into a forest ranger’s residence.
The name “Kuoppa” is older than the house itself – it is believed to come from a deep pool in the Äkäsjoki River, once known as a popular trout fishing spot.
Before official registration, families often lived on the land for years, even decades.
The founder of Kuopan Tila is considered to be Kilian Friman, after whom the road leading to the estate – Kiljaanintie – was named.
The farm was built on a sunny southern slope, near the meeting point of two rivers – a location the old folk regarded as ideal for settlement.
Archaeological findings show three Stone Age dwelling sites on or near the farm’s land.
Later, a footpath and cart road ran through the Kuopan yard, connecting Äkäsjokisuu and Äkäslompolo.
At that time, the road ended right at Kuoppa, and the house became a natural resting place for travellers and visitors.
The nearby logging sites and forest camps also left their mark on the everyday life and history of Kuopan Tila.
1998

In 1998, Kuopan Tila was purchased by Ansku and Pekka Orvola from Oulu.
The estate and its previous owner were already familiar to them – Ansku and Pekka had visited Ylläs many times with Ansku’s parents and often stayed at Kuopan Tila during their trips.
2000

In 2000, the main building of the estate was completely renovated.
The old cowshed was dismantled, and a new one was built in its place – respecting the style and spirit of the original structure.
Life at the farm continued: the new cowshed housed an interior design shop called Grooppi, which also featured a small café.
Grooppi and its courtyard became a venue for various local events.
At the same time, Kuopan Tila offered accommodation for travellers – and later, it also became the home of Ansku and Pekka.
2019

In 2019, Mari Rounaja, the daughter of Ansku and Pekka, together with her husband Antti, purchased the estate and made it their own.
And so, the story continues…
2025

The new Cafe & Butik Kuopan Tila will open its doors in November 2025.
Accommodation services will continue alongside the other activities on the estate.
Kuopan Tila still welcomes guests and travellers, hosting various events throughout the year.
The family’s three sons are now part of the story – the place holds a special meaning for them, as they have grown up running around its yard since they were little.
Lovingly called Grandpa’s little shop boys, they are now continuing the legacy of Kuopan Tila in their own way.
